Liquid Make Up formulas will contain some pretty basic ingredients. Some will be specialized and have unrecognizable ingredients with long names and others will be fairly basic. All Make Up formulas will have the following. The percentages will vary depending on your formula.

Water: 60-70%

An emulsifier: This is what blends the oil and water together. 2-5%

A humectant: Attracts moisture from the air. (glycerin, honey, sorbital) 2-5%

Emollients: (These are oils either natural or chemical ) 7-10%

Powder: Cuts the greasy feeling 2-5%

Colorant: usually iron oxides 1-3%

Titanium Dioxide, adjusts the color and gives the make-up opacity 4-6%

Preservative: Keeps the liquid free of yeasts, molds and bacteria (as needed)

I wear a liquid makeup that has the simplest of ingredients but has good coverage and is lightweight. We are currently having it manufactured for re-sale in our “coming soon” makeup line.

Here is the ingredient list:

Water (dilutes the rest of the ingredients)

Sesame Oil (emollient)

Jojoba Oil (emollient)

Avocado Oil (emollient)

Aloe Leaf Extract (active ingredient)

Glycerin (humectant)

Cetearyl Alcohol (emulsifier)

Shea Butter (emollient)

Lecithin (emulsifier)

Xanthan Gum (thickener)

Phenoxyethanol (preservative, anti-bacterial)

Postasium Sorbate (fights yeast and mold growth)

Kaolin: Cuts the greasy feeling

Iron Oxide and Titanium Dioxide: Colorants

All the above ingredients may be sources naturally. If you want to learn more about formulas and what are in your products, have a look at the label and the ingredient list. Try to categorize under one of the above headings. If you don’t know what it is, look it up on the internet. This is how I first started teaching myself how to formulate. If I found an ingredient I did not want to use then I would find out what it was and substitute is with a more natural counterpart.
