Description
Product Name: Naturagard™
INCI: Glyceryl Monocaprylate Shipping Name: Fatty Acid Ester Cas #26402-26-6 Green Code: 3 Description: Semi-solid flakes Melting Point: 35°C-95°F Soluble in Oil, and Water Applications: Emulsions and Surfactant Bases Usage Rate: 0.5-1.5 Works best in a pH range of 4-7.5 and in combination with organic acids such as potassium sorbate or lactic acid. Naturagard is a 100% natural fatty acid ester that may be used in "self preserving systems" for cosmetics. Glyceryl Caprylate is a natural acid ester that acts as a natural emulsifier in addition to effective biological control. Glyceryl monoesters are used mostly as skin-conditioning agents—emollients and/or surfactant—emulsifying agents in cosmetics.
Naturagard™ is extremely flexible. It does not react with other ingredients, it has no odor in the end product and there are no heat restricitons when incorporating it into products.
Challenge tests have shown that when used with lactic acid to adjust the pH of the product to under 6.0 it is just as effective as a combination of phenoxyethanol and methylparaben. It may be even more effective at a pH lower than 6.0 and the additonal use of 0.25-0.5% potassium sorbate.
Unlike Capryl Glycol which is derived from petrochemcial sources, Naturagard™ is 100% derived from vegetable sources and is Eco-cert certified. The Eco-cert denotes that the standards used to manufacture this ingredient has exceeded FDA requirements. For more information on it's usage visit our Recipe section.

Interpreting MIC Values
These materials are effective at similar orders of magnitude:
• Naturaguard™ inhibits all microorganisms if used at appropriate concentrations.
• Same order-of-magnitude effect as phenoxyethanol and methylparaben.
MIC alone cannot predict outcomes in cosmetic systems:
• MIC values do not indicate the inhibition kinetics – concentrations lower than the MIC can still strongly inhibit growth.
• Compounds can partition into the oil phase and/or be inactivated by other ingredients.

Enhancing Activity with Organic Acids
• Lactic, citric, benzoic, and sorbic acids provide additional biological control
•Important for improving the kill of A. Niger
•pH must be under 6.5; even better if under 6.0
Recommendations The results of in-use tests, market feedback, and the challenge tests indicate: Naturaguard™is the most effective “non-preservative” preservative on the market, and provides humectancy and great skin-feel. Self-preserving systems are possible with Naturaguard™at 1%.
Enhanced activity (e.g., against A. Niger) can be achieved by combining Naturaguard™ and organic acids (pH less than 6.5).
