How to Make a Lip or Eye Pencil

Making a Jumbo Lip Pencil

Making your own jumbo or slim pencils is simple as can be!

First you will want to prepare your work area. Pigments are messy and they will stain your hands and counters so always make sure you have your working area covered. Additionally I put newspaper on the floor where I am working as pigment dust can settle on the floor also.

You will need some basic supplies.

Scale for weighing: This is handy but not essential. You can guess and experiment with amounts and still come up with a pencil that will make you happy.

  • Base either Translucent or with Titanium for better coverage.
  • Measuring Scoops
  • Measuring Cups
  • Heat Source
  • Pigments
  • Empty Pencils
  • Syringes for filling

Instructions

Measure out the amount of base that you need to make the number of pencils you would like. Each jumbo pencil holds approximately 3 grams of colored base, the slim pencils hold about ½ to 1 gram.

Melt you base either on the stove or in the microwave and mix in your pigment.

Mix well so you have no lumps and the pigment is distributed evenly.

For this pencil I used red oxide and then added some gold mica for a glitter effect. How much to add is really up to how strongly colored you would like your final product. Oxides and Lakes may be used at very low rates. Start with just a tiny scoop. Micas need to be used at much higher rates. Start with a large scoop. Make sure you are using pigments that are approved for your purpose. You can get more information here:

Pencils are easier to fill if you leave the bottom cap off till after you fill the pencil.

Draw up your melted product into a syringe. The 3cc syringes are best forslim pencils and the 6 or 10 cc for the jumbo. After you draw your melted base into the syringe, inject it into the pencil with a slow and steady pressure. Stop injecting when it starts to come out the other end. You might want to do this over newspaperJ

After your pencil has completely hardened it is time to sharpen your pencil. If your base is somewhat soft you can put the pencils in the freezer for a bit and then sharpen them.

Your pencil is now ready to use!
