Make your own Mascara and Eyeliner

When making your own eye products only the purest ingredients that are specifically made for cosmetics should be used. This includes food grade type powders such as corn flour. When making your own mascara you should never play around with preservatives that have not been tested for the eye area for both irritation and efficacy. Don’t ever make or use mascara where a preservative has been left out. I can’t over emphasize how important it is to work in the most sterile manner possible and to avoid cutting any corners when making mascara. Here a few tips on how to use mascara in the safest manner. I would suggest throwing any mascara out that has not been used within 60 days.

Instructions and Guidance

Safety Measures

  • If any eye cosmetic causes irritation you should stop using it immediately.
  • If the irritation persists, go see a doctor.
  • Avoid using any eye cosmetics if you already have an eye infection.
  • Always wash your hands and face before applying eye cosmetics as bacteria from your hands made be transferred to your eyes.
  • Make sure any instrument you place in your eye is clean.
  • Don’t share your cosmetics. Another person’s bacteria may be hazardous to you.
  • Keep you cosmetics containers clean and DON’T REUSE any containers for eye cosmetics or creams that may be used around the eye area.
  • Discard dried up mascara.
  • Don’t try to re-moisten Mascara or Eyeliner with water as you may be introducing bacteria into it.
  • Don’t store your cosmetics in a hot place, store in cool place.
  • When applying or removing eye makeup be careful not to scratch your eyeball!
  • Don’t use cosmetics near the eye area that are not intended for that use. For example do not use a lip pencil as an eyeliner also.
  • Avoid any color or cosmetic additives that are not specifically approved for use in the eye area.

Mascara Formula

Mascara with Jojoba Gloss

This formula will fill approximately 10 Mascara containers depending on how full they are. Most people use about 7ml per container. Jojoba Wax creates volume and flexibility while Jojoba Gloss helps the applicator glide over the lashes, prevents clumping and adds shine. To make 5 Mascaras cut the recipe in 1/2.

Tools You Will Need (plus your kit)

  • Glass or Stainless steel vessels for measuring and heating.
  • Scale that measures in grams
  • Thermometer for measuring the temperature of your mixtures.
  • Alcohol for disinfection your tools and containers.
  • A small mixer or glass stirring rods. My Recommendation.
  • A 4 ounce bottle with squeeze tube tip.
  • Mascara containers

This is not a beginner project. If you have never made a cream or lotion or an emulsion before I suggest before proceeding you go to our site and read our instructions on making creams and lotions. You will find it in our FORMULARY section under “HOW DO I?” It will then make more sense to you.

It is also important that you are well organized and get all your tools together before you proceed. The emulsion can cool and harden quickly so you need to be ready to pour!

100mls or 3.2 ounces

Phase A

Pure Distilled Water 57.5 grams

Iron Oxide 15 grams

Naturajel  1.0 grams

Potassium Sorbate 0.5 grams

Lactic Acid 1 gram

Phase B

Jojoba Aqua 2.0 grams

Jojobamulse 2 grams

Phase C

Phenoxyethanol 1.0 grams

Jojoba Wax Flakes 8.0 grams

Jojoba Esters 70 8 grams

Lactymulse™ 5 grams

Jojoba Gloss LV 5 grams

Instructions

  1. Make up a solution of 2% Clorox and Warm water and wipe down all your work surfaces with the solution.
  2. Spray down all your containers and tools with alcohol. Rinse out your squeeze bottle with alcohol and squeeze a bit through the tip. Wipe down the outside of the tip also. I also like to spray the outside of the mascara container and the inside of the cap.
  3. Measure out your water and add the black oxide (or the color of your choice) to the water. Stir it in well and make sure it’s well dispersed. Sprinkle in the Naturajel, Potassium Sorbate and Lactic Acid. Stir again. Add the Jojoba Aqua and Jojobamulse to this and set aside. (Phase B)
  4. Measure out all your Phase C Ingredients into a separate Container.
  5. It is tricky working and heating such small amounts. I have a gas range and place a pie pan with a little bit of water in it on top. I then add put my stainless steel bowls on this as the range can make the pots heat up too quickly.
  6. Heat up both the vessels to 80 degrees Centigrade. (Vessel 1 with Phase A& B and Vessel 2 with Phase C)
  7. Pour Phase C into Phase A & B and stir till thickened and well blended. This is when a small battery mixer comes in handy. If you don’t have one try one of those tiny whisks. (You don’t want to get lots of air into it.) Your Mascara should look like a creamy loose pudding and with thicken more when it cools.
  8.  As quickly as possible either draw your mascara into a syringe, (if it’s runny enough) or pour it into your squeeze bottle. Squeeze it into your containers. It will thicken very quickly and be hard to work with if you are not ready to proceed. If this happens try microwaving it for 30 seconds.  Squeeze the amount you want into each mascara container. You can know exactly how much you have put in their by weighing them before and after. Always make sure your mascara has cooled completely before putting your plug and cap into the container. You’re finished now, enjoy your luxurious and natural mascara.
