Natural Liquid Colors

Recent studies have linked artificial colorings to cancer and brain tumors as well as links to hyperactivity ADD, ADHD, and other disruptive behaviors in children. Artificial colors are made up of tar derivatives, long chain hydrocarbons, and other petrochemicals and are of no use to your body.

The FDA is now requiring a warning label on foods with artificial dyes or colors and is considering, under the advisory of advocacy groups, banning the sale of the following commonly used colors: Yellow #5 & #6, Red #40 & #3, Blue #1 & #2, Green #3, and Orange B

What's the solution? Natural Colors

Natural & Organic Colors made using only all natural and organic plant extracts which have been shown to be high in bioflavonoids, polyphenols, and antioxidants all of which are active, beneficial, additives to your products.

Natural colors must be approved by the FDA for use in foods, cosmetics and drugs, but are not subject to batch certification. Examples of "Natural" colors are beet , paprika , annatto, turmeric, titanium dioxide, caramel and cabbage to name but a few.

So why aren’t Natural colors used more?

Compared to artificial colors, they are generally more expensive, the hues are less vibrant, the palate of available shades is limited, and they are not as concentrated. Stability can be effected by other ingredients and variations in pH. They generally have a short shelf life before fading occurs as compared to their artificial counterparts. Given the side effects of their synthetic counterparts we feel they are a feasible alternative for "as natural as can be" cosmetics. Most people when educated on the subject are happy to make the switch.

NOTE: DIY Cosmetics makes no claims about the suitability of natural colors for any given purpose. Some colors will impart some flavor or odor on the finished product, and may render unsatisfactory results, others may not hold up well to High-Heat applications or exrtemely high or low pH levels. We encourage our customers to test in small batches.

Though our natural colors are approved for use in food there are very few colors actually approved for use by the FDA for cosmetics. You only need be concerned with this if you are manufacturing products for resale, this need not apply to handmade cosmetics for your own use. Products using fruit colors need to be properly preserved as with any other product that contains water.
